Dresden’s Popular Melon Festival Celebrates Area’s Melon Growing Heritage with Kids Games, Fishing Tournament, Entertainment and More

The all-day celebration of Dresden’s melon growing tradition returned on Saturday, August 7.

Just like in years past, the annual Dresden Melon Festival offered something for everyone on its itinerary including a fishing tournament that began early in the morning, a flag raising, 5K, and performance by the Tri-Valley marching band later in the morning. The fun continued with kids’ games and a car show in the afternoon, followed by evening entertainment. Food and craft vendors were available all day.

Over 50 runners participated in the 5K. Dalton Crozier, age 14, clocked the fastest time with 18-year-old Nathan Sauerbrey and 32-year-old Cory Reid coming in right behind in second and third places respectively.

There were over 20 boats out on the Muskingum River for the fishing tournament. Fish were weighed in the afternoon and the winners were announced. First place went to Shane Wolfe and Cody Hartman, second place was Justin Wilkins and Colt Lewis, and third place was Troy Spiker and Brandon Bronkar.

Kids’ activities included seed spitting, melon eating contest, and the highly anticipated melon derby. The melon derby winners for 2021 were Dalton, Taylor, and Logan Crozier.
