There are many reasons an organ
transplant is needed, some may be from
health complications, autoimmune dis-
orders, or injury. With permission from
a family friend, my “aunt”, I am honored
to share her story surrounding donation.
Her story begins in 1976; after finding
out she was a juvenile diabetic. At 25,
her doctors informed her that her kid-
neys were failing, for another 25 years
she kept her kidneys functioning with
medication and care until routine blood-
work turned up issues that put her on
the transplant list. Diabetes had caused
complications that lead her kidneys to
fail with a 1-3 year waiting period for
a pancreas and kidneys. In 2018, she
received a call that changed her life for-
ever, there is one person ahead of her
for a transplant and to be ready at a mo-
ment’s notice. That gentleman could not
receive a transplant due to taking Tylenol
that day so away she went to Columbus
for a 6-hour surgery. Once she awoke
from the surgery, she was no longer a di-
abetic after 43 years with the condition.
Daniel age 26, her donor, transformed
her life forever after a tragedy occurred
in another’s. One person can change the
world when they choose to Donate Life.
My aunt volunteers with the Donate Life
organization to help register those who
want to donate and spread awareness
to the importance of organ donation. Af-
ter 7 years, she continues to share her
vibrant and caring personality with the
world! Take the time to reach out to Do-
nate Life and register today, make the
difference for those in need.
