Walking into the beautiful brick entrance at Logan’s Chieftain Stadium it is easy to get intimidated by the sheer size of the 5800+ seat facility. However, the Scotties showed no signs of being intimidated when senior defensive back Carson Simpkins grabbed an interception within the first few minutes of the game and ran it 51 yards for a Tri-Valley touchdown.
Tri-Valley continued to dominate the Logan team racking up a 34-0 lead by halftime.
“I think our team played well today. Our line worked hard and drove back. Quarterbacks threw good balls and the receivers caught everything. We had good special teams and all together we just came out and got it done today” stated senior Carson Simpkins number 4, wide receiver and defensive back for the Scotties.
Varsity quarterback Luke Fargus had an impressive evening with 10 out of 10 completed passes, two of which resulted in touchdowns and a total of 138 passing yards. Fargus said “I thought we did really well for the season opener. A lot of people had a lot of doubts with us switching all of our coaches and 20 seniors but I think we came out and showed what we could do!” When asked about how it felt to be back after missing two seasons with a shoulder injury Fargus’s comment was”It feels good to be back, missing two years is not something that is easy to come back from, but I worked my butt off and here we are.”
The Scotties did let one Chieftain touchdown squeak through but immediately answered the following kickoff with Carson Simpkins 84 yard return for the final touchdown of the night bringing the final score to 48-7 after the extra point put through by kicker Kaden Bay who was also having a flawless night.
Head Coach Kevin Fell had these words “Well, you know we had no idea. We played a team that’s two hours away, we watched them on film, walked into the stadium at this school and the kids were pretty impressed. We played pretty well, I don’t think our quarterbacks missed one pass until the end of the game. Defensively, I think we are getting better we are a better defensive team now then we were two weeks ago. We’re content with the night, we needed to get that first win, at least for me, I was pretty nervous because I hadn’t been around the team during regular play. They were a lot calmer than I was. Our kicker kicked the ball well, we ran the ball back, those are all things you hope you can accomplish this time of year.”
