D.E.A.R.S. Celebrating 10th Year

The D.E.A.R.S. (Dresden Elementary Amateur Radio Station) Club is celebrating their tenth anniversary this school year!  Just after the start of the school year, Dresden Elementary students in 5th and 6th grades were invited to join the after-school club that has grown to become quite a sensation.  The club is comprised of about 22 students and is lead by KD8NOM founder-advisor Mr. James Mayercak.

Dresden Elementary is very fortunate to have this unique club available to students as it is the only elementary school to have an Amateur Radio Club in the state of Ohio.  Students communicate with other “hams” across the USA and worldwide, learn radio fundamentals including how to operate the various radios, assemble circuits to make electronic gadgets, and compete against other schools across the nation in radio contests.  The club has brought home numerous first and second place titles from these contests. They have also been recognized by the General Assembly of the State of Ohio for exemplary work in Amateur Radio by Senators Keith Faber and Troy Balderson.  Some members are even FCC licensed and have been presenters at the Dayton Hamvention/Youth Forum on Amateur Radio.

The D.E.A.R.S. Club is ready for another exceptional year.  “This new group of students are prepared to go to bigger heights this school year with some new challenges.”, says Mayercak.
