Only a mere four percent of Boy Scouts obtain the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest achievement acquirable in the organization. Samuel Hartman is among the few who hold that honor.
Last Sunday, Samuel was awarded his final badge as a Boy Scout at a ceremony with his troop, Troop 164. As part of the ceremony, he was able to recognize his mentors, Matt Winland, Terry Toland, and Matthew Murphy.
Earning the status of Eagle Scout is a huge undertaking that requires years of dedication and persistence. In addition, 21 merit badges must be earned, the recipient of the honor must demonstrate “Scout Spirit” and an extensive service project has to be completed.
Samuel took on the task of enhancing the Shelly Company Wildlife Habitat Site by clearing out old fire pits and benches and replacing them with new ones. He had to do the planning, leading and managing
In addition to being an Eagle Scout, Samuel has also received two brotherhood awards as part of the Order of the Arrow, referred to as the National Honor Society of the Boy Scouts of America. About one-seventh of registered Boy Scouts are inducted into the Order of the Arrow. Samuel had to be nominated to be considered. There are a number of requirements that had to be met and extra service projects that he had to complete.
Many values, skills and traits have been instilled in Samuel since he first joined Cub Scouts in 3rd grade as a Bear. Among those are leadership skills, the ability to compromise with others, and he has improved his self confidence.
Memories that will last a lifetime have also been a huge gain for Samuel during his Boy Scout experience. Working at the Muskingum Valley Scout Reservation in 2017 and 2018 and then as a counselor in training in 2016 have been the root of some of his favorite moments. Another stand-out for Samuel was a winter camp out called the “Klondike” which he attended in 2014. The National Jamboree campout which he attended in 2017 and only happens every four years in West Virginia is also high on the list.
Even though Samuel has reached the highest achievement in Scouting he is not ready to walk away just yet. He is very involved in local Cub Scout Pack 121. He enjoys working with the younger kids as Assistant Den Leader. He has helped to organize popcorn sales, two food drives and their pack’s involvement in the parade.
Samuel highly recommends that if anyone is thinking about joining that they do.
