Nashport Elementary Earns 2019 Battle of the Books Victory

Teams of fifth graders from five Muskingum County elementary schools took on a literary challenge in the Muskingum County Library System’s Battle of the Books. Among the participating schools were two of Tri-Valley’s own, Dresden and Nashport Elementary.

All five teams which also included students from National Road, Zane Grey and John McIntire, were tasked with reading three books that they separately discussed and studied within their own five-person team over the course of a few months. The books included a biography, Super Soaker Inventor, as well as two fiction selections ReStart and Haddix. Each team had a teacher as an adviser to coach the students through the process in preparation for the big battle.

The teams gathered on Saturday, April 27th at the MCLS to compete for a chance to win their school $100 to spend on books for their library and an epic trophy (a gold accented Rockem Sockem Robots trophy). Three rounds of questions pertaining to each of the three books were read to the teams who huddled at five separate tables furnished with iPads where they could select answers or “buzz” in to answer.

The first round was a close one with several teams earning the lead at one point or another but in the end, round one went to Dresden! Round two narrowed the competition down to just three teams; Nashport, National Road and John McIntire. A quick-thinking final round proved Nashport the winner of this year’s Battle of the Books.
