Samuel Frazey Descendants Visit Town He Founded

The village of Frazeysburg was visited by two descendants of town founder, Samuel B. Frazey on July 11, 2019. Jim and Conner Frazey were greeted by the Mayor of Frazeysburg, Gerald Howard and toured the town. One of their stops included the cemetery where Samuel is buried.

Samuel founded the town in 1832. Before then, when the town was originally laid out in 1827 by Clark Hollenback, it was known as Knoxville. Samuel purchased the tract in 1828 and later changed the name to Frazeysburgh. This was done partly because a post office was desired at that point, and one by the name of Knoxville already existed. The rule of the Post Office Department required that no two post offices should have the same name, within the same state.
Samuel opened a store near the northeast corner of the Frazeysburgh canal bridge, in 1828-9. This was the largest store yet opened and was continued for a number of years. During this same time, Samuel was also the postmaster for the first post office in the township.
