Writing a book was not exactly in the plans originally for Marti Powell Shrigley. Her book titled Bare Feet, Chicken Beaks and Blackberry Pie, was created out of boredom but has become a way for Marti to speak to people about Christ.
The book tells about humorous stories from her life but also addresses some serious curveballs much like those that life likes to oftentimes throw at us all, but in each situation, Marti finds the good in it through her faith.
Bare Feet, Chicken Beaks and Blackberry Pie is a short read with only 158 pages but it was intentionally planned this way. The book features “modern-day parables” as one reviewer described them, which will oftentimes give you a good laugh but for Marti, the main purpose in writing the book was to be an “Ambassador for Christ”.
Marti has been able to reach her audience through speaking engagements. One such opportunity presented itself when a former classmate and long-time friend Hinda Ardrey invited Marti to chat about her book during the Making Connections Ladies Group gathering for their book club discussion on Wednesday, August 28. Both Hinda and Caroline Green, who was also in attendance, graduated with Marti from Frazeysburg High School in 1964.
Making Connections welcomes new members who enjoy crafting, book club, cooking, gardening and exploring interesting topics. Meetings are every Wednesday from 1-3 in the Frazeysburg Presbyterian Church (West Carlisle Rd.) basement. The group focuses on a different theme for their gathering each Wednesday of the month. Week one is food/nutrition, week two is a field trip or a guest speaker, crafts is the theme for week three and week four it is all about books. Everyone who participates in the book club as part of the Making Connections Ladies Group gets a month to read the selected book and then they hold a discussion during that fourth meeting of the month.
