ZANESVILLE, January 2020 — Several area middle school students earned top honors recently at the local Muskingum Valley Chapter MATHCOUNTS competition hosted by Muskingum Valley Educational Service Center.
A Tri-Valley Middle School team recently earned second place. Team members included Ben Beebe, Bode McCullough, Jack Morehouse, Eric Timm and Coach Kirstin Blair. Andrew Van Meter from Philo Junior High captured the top individual honor, and Brendan Bernath from Bishop Fenwick School won the Countdown Round.
Along with Van Meter, East Muskingum Middle School’s Tanner Caudill, Rushville Middle School’s Gus Swinehart and Sheridan Middle School’s Brandt Bailey will represent the local chapter as individual winners. The Tri-Valley team and the four individual winners will now advance to the state competition held in Columbus on March 7, 2020. The top four individuals from the state competition will represent Ohio at the 2020 Raytheon MATHCOUNTS National Competition in Orlando, Florida, May 10-12.
More than 100,000 students across the U.S. participate each year in the MATHCOUNTS Competition Series, a national math competition that aims to build confidence and problem-solving skills for students who participate. Programs like MATHCOUNTS are critical to preparing students to succeed in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) careers of the future.
The Muskingum Valley Chapter program is sponsored by APG Architects, LLC, Cambridge Packaging, Colgate-Palmolive, The Robert E. Fellers and Leona L. Fellers Foundation Trust, Muskingum Valley Educational Service Center (MVESC) and Zane State College. Gifted Education Coordinator Susan Larson and Math Curriculum Consultant Ruth Ware from the Muskingum Valley Educational Service Center provided leadership at the local levels for the MATHCOUNTS Competition.
