OHSAA Suspends High School Football Scrimmages

On Tuesday, July 28 the Ohio High School Athletic Association sent a memo to administrators informing them that scrimmages for football and other contact sports are suspended until further notice.

First-year head coach for the Tri-Valley Scotties, Cam West had this to say about the announcement. “The recent news provided by the OHSAA pertaining to scrimmages is tough but not a deal-breaker. Scrimmages are huge in evaluating personnel. Without them, we will have to come up with other ways to evaluate our personnel in game-like situations.”

The OHSAA added to the memo that practice remains “on track” to begin August 1st. Low and non-contact sports will be allowed to have scrimmages and matchups between different schools at their normal scheduled dates. These sports include golf and volleyball. Soccer will also have to abide by the no scrimmage rule.

Regardless of the situation the Scotties, coach West and staff are willing to do whatever it takes to follow all mandates and requirements to have a football season.

“As far as the recommendations provided by the OHSAA and local health departments like social distancing, extra cleaning, etc. We are following them as well as we possibly can. At this point, I’m willing to do just about anything so our guys get the chance to play football this year. If that means we have to take temperatures, do health assessments, constantly sanitize, and social distance, that’s what we will do. Our guys have responded well to the changes we have made to accommodate the recommendations. I have told them all along to only worry about the things that we can control. At this point, all we can control is getting better every single day. If we open up the season August 28th we will be ready to go.”
