Adamsville Boy Scout Troop 122 Honor American Flag at Retirement Ceremony

Fifty-four worn American Flags were retired at a Flag Retirement Ceremony that Adamsville Boy Scout Troop 122 held outside the Adamsville Community Building on Sunday evening, August 16.

Dalton Cooper, Preston Ferrell, Skyler Gillard, Aaron, McConnell, Eli McDonald, Jack McDonald, Conner Mitchell, and Hayden Weck of Troop 122 displayed professionalism and great respect as they performed the different guidelines required to properly retire American Flags at the ceremony. One scout played taps on the trumpet. The Star-Spangled Banner and God Bless America were proudly sung.

The U.S. Flag Code states that “The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.”

Before burning, the flag is cut with scissors in a specific way. The blue star field is left intact to show that the union should never be broken. The flag is then reduced to ashes being careful to make sure that nothing is left so it can not be disrespected.
