ZANESVILLE, OH –  Purple Alzheimer’s shirts will be seen all over Muskingum, Guernsey, Licking, and Coshocton counties on September 19 as participants in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s show their support for Alzheimer’s research, care and support.

Walkers in next month’s Zanesville Walk to End Alzheimer’s will also have new tools to enhance the Walk experience.

Registration is now open for this year’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s. While the Alzheimer’s Association is not gathering a large crowd because of COVID-19 restrictions, participants are encouraged to walk individually in their neighborhoods to join the movement.

“The Walk to End Alzheimer’s is a way for individuals and families who have been touched by any form of dementia to fight back. The funds raised enables free services to families and supports vital research to develop better treatments and ultimately a cure for the disease,” said Cheryl Kanetsky, Executive Director, Alzheimer’s Association Greater East Ohio Area Chapter.

“In these unique times, the impact of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias are even more challenging. We need more people to support the cause and join the fight,” She said. The goal is to raise $55,000.

Last year about 420 people participated in the Zanesville Walk and raised $50,000. The Walk Ceremony, with the traditional Promise Garden Ceremony, will occur at 10  a.m. and will be livestreamed on the Walk to End Alzheimer’s app. Coburn United Methodist Church, located at 3618 Maple Ave, Zanesville, will be the site of the view-only Promise Garden location from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

People can go to alz.org/walk to register for the event. On Walk Day, participants are encouraged to:

  • Log onto Mainstage, the event’s interactive online experience
  • Livestream the opening Promise Garden Ceremony
  • Walk in your neighborhood
  • Track your steps using the app
  • Visit the Promise Garden location

The Zanesville Walk to End Alzheimer’s is one of seven Walks the Greater East Ohio Area Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association is having this year. Last year, more than 4,200 Northeast Ohio residents participated in those Walks. The Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research programs.

Alzheimer’s is a progressive, fatal disease that kills nerve cells and tissues in the brain, affecting an individual’s ability to remember, think and plan. The Greater East Ohio Area Chapter makes care and support available to 60,000 people with Alzheimer’s disease in the chapter area, and an additional 250,000 people affected through their role as caregivers.
