Genesis Heart & Vascular Institute Celebrates Milestones

Continues to Lead with Innovative Procedures

On Monday, Nov. 16, Genesis HealthCare System’s Structural Heart team performed the 100th transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) procedure at the hospital. The TAVR procedure was launched at Genesis in April 2019, as a minimally invasive heart procedure to replace diseased valves as an option to open-heart surgery.

“Reaching the 100th TAVR procedure milestone is a testament to the teamwork and dedication of our team,” says Mohamed Ahmed, M.D., director of the structural heart program. Along with Dr. Ahmed, the team that performs TAVR procedures at Genesis includes Alaa Gabi, M.D., interventional cardiologist, Atiq Rehman, M.D., chief cardiothoracic surgeon and Abimbola Shofu, M.D., general cardiologist. Coincidentally, Nov. 16 also marked the 20th anniversary of Genesis launching its open-heart program.

“I am honored to be part of the Genesis Heart & Vascular team. Genesis has done an outstanding job of recruiting talented physicians and incorporating new procedures. In just over a year, we have added four minimally invasive heart and vascular procedures that significantly reduce risks of complications and recovery time,” said Dr. Rehman.

In addition to the new minimally invasive procedures, Dr. Rehman is one of only 40 surgeons in the United States performing robotic-assisted coronary bypass surgery. The surgery can extend life expectancy, alleviate symptoms and has quicker recovery time than traditional coronary bypass surgery.
