Sounds of Good Health with Genesis

Robotics and Minimally Invasive Heart Surgery

submitted

The latest podcast from Genesis is now available. “Robotics & Minimally Invasive Heart Surgery,” is a conversation with Atiq Rehman, M.D., Chief of Cardiovascular Surgery, Genesis Heart & Vascular Institute. Dr. Rehman highlights the advantages of robotic assisted bypass surgery including quicker recovery and smaller incisions.

“Routine bypass surgery is done by cracking the breastbone and opening the chest. Robotic assisted bypass surgery is done to avoid that. With robotic assisted bypass surgery, there is about a one- to five-centimeter incision between the breast and the rib cage,” Dr. Rehman said. Only a small percentage of surgeons across the U.S. are specially trained to provide the minimally invasive robotic assisted surgery.
