WORDS FROM THE HEART…When America’s Veterans Speak

“From the War to end all Wars Redmond takes us to Normandy in Europe, the Inchon landing in Korea, the rice patties of Vietnam, the Mother of all Battles and the other campaigns in the Middle East where our nation’s heroes tell their story in their own words. On the ground, sea and in the air, these words tell of heroic actions where ‘all gave some and some gave all.’ Her book reminds us that we live in the Land of the Free because it was also the Home of the Brave–may it always be.” …General Dennis J. Reimer, U.S. Army (Ret), 33d Chief of Staff

Front cover of WORDS FROM THE HEART… When America’s Veterans Speak.

Redmond shares first-hand accounts of men and women who served in World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, the Persian Gulf, Iraq and Afghanistan. She has been interviewing veterans for the Library of Congress Veterans History Project for nearly 20 years. Stories included are the Kissing Sailor, and the “Nurse” he kissed, the co-pilot with Doolittle’s during his Raid on Tokyo, a sergeant who remembers saving General Eisenhower’s life, men who parachuted into Normandy and stormed the beaches on D-Day during WWII. You will meet Tuskegee Airman Colonel Charles McGee who holds the Air Force record for the most combat missions in three wars, and many more, including Rosie the Riveters, nurses who were in the fields of combat before it was allowed, POWs, and female MPs in the Persian Gulf War. There are five stories of WWI veterans, including the last living Doughboy, Frank Buckles.

Also, perhaps of interest to those in Dresden, are two home-grown veterans, General David Bice, a career Marine officer, and George Miller, who served in both the Army and Navy. Sally Thompson Prouty and Patricia Tyson Redmond also grew up in this area.

Individuals who did not have the opportunity to learn about the war time experience of family members or friends, perhaps because many were reluctant to share their stories, as well as others who simply want to understand what military service in war time is really like, will benefit from reading this book. Words From The Heart was published Memorial Day Weekend and is available at Amazon, or if you want an autographed copy, contact patipt@comcast.net. Redmond’s first book, We the Widows, based on her ten years’ experience as the widow of LTC Robert Redmond, was published in 2018.
