Saturday, and Sunday, June 19th and 20th, Dresden Swim Center hosted the largest swim meet in the state of Ohio for the 2021 season. With teams from four different states including Ohio, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, totaling over 600 swimmers from 25 teams.
This was the first year for Dresden to host the Pau Hana’s Jill Griesse Memorial swim meet that began in 2015 as a way to remember the club’s founder, a national champion and hall of famer, Greisse died in 2014 after battling pancreatic cancer. One of the meet’s primary goals is to raise money for cancer research.
Up until recently, the Dresden swim center had been underutilized for the capabilities that it was designed for, with an Olympic-sized eight-lane 50-meter outdoor facility. Coach Christi Holmes of Tri-Valley’s High School swim team and the newly formed Dresden Dorados was instrumental in opening the swim center up to the possibility of hosting the meet.
With the restrictions from 2020 and COVID-19 keeping many swim centers and larger pools closed to such meets, the Village of Dresden was happy to step up and provide a place for these aquatic competitors to face off.
