Local Teen Takes On 50 Yard Challenge to Help Community

14-Year-old Tri-Valley student Colton Wisecarver has accepted a challenge to mow 50 yards for free through the 50 Yard Challenge.

The 50 Yard Challenge is organized and run by Raising Men & Women Lawn Care Service, a 501(c)(3) organization. The group provides an outlet for young people who want to help people in their community.

Those that accept the challenge must mow, rake leaves, or shovel snow (depending on the time of year) the yards of people who can not take care of it themselves or just need a little extra help. Those who are elderly, disabled, single moms, veterans or anyone who can not mow their grass all qualify to have their yards mowed for free.

The program currently has around 1,850 active participants from 8 countries.

The 50 Yard Challenge is perfect for Colton who likes helping other people and wants to start his own lawn care business. For every 10 yards completed Colton will receive a new colored shirt (much like belts in martial arts). Once he completes all 50 yards he will receive a new mower, weedeater and a leaf blower to be able to continue helping those in the community.

Colton enjoys meeting the people that he helps. He has already mowed eight yards at the time of this article. Not only does Colton mow he also goes the extra mile to make the yards of those he helps look their best by weeding flower beds etc. He has had the opportunity to help a breast cancer survivor, a victim of a motorcycle accident, some veterans, and a few elderly people as well.

Besides yard work, Colton spends his time playing baseball, showing market goats and horses through 4-H, hunting, and fishing. He is also in archery and will be playing freshmen football at Tri-Valley this fall.

“I really think this program is very awesome for young kids to get them out of the house and learn responsibility, respect, compassion, caring, and work ethic that this world needs,” stated Colton’s mom.
