Dresden Branch Library Hosts First Story Walk

by Katelyn Dotson, Guest Writer

This summer, Dresden Branch Library is providing a way for families to enjoy reading together in Dresden’s very first story walk. Though this is Dresden’s first story walk, the main branch has been hosting story walks monthly during warm-weather months for over a year.

The title of the book being featured is “Pete the Cat Checks Out the Library”. After receiving permission from the Dresden mayor, the Dresden Branch Library decided to hold the walk in the 9th street park, adjacent to the Dresden Library. The walk requires participants to start at the title page of the book and go from one page to the next until they complete the book. Once participants finish reading the story, they may go into the library to receive a prize.

The library originally planned to place a storybook page in each flower pot on Main Street, but soon decided that it would be too long of a walk for young children. The library is using this first story walk as a trial to see if many people participate. If they get a good turnout, they plan to host another walk in the fall. If the walk takes off, they will do more next year. However, there will not be any walks in the winter because of cold weather.

Story walks are a fun and efficient way to improve literacy and provide a chance for people to read together while enjoying the outdoors.
