Obituary: Dave Schweitzer

Dave Schweitzer, 74, of Dresden, entered the gates of Heaven Wednesday evening, September 29, 2021, at Genesis Hospital in Zanesville.

Born August 31, 1947, on the family farm in Dresden, Ohio, a son of the late Merle and Bernadine (Randles) Schweitzer and a 1965 graduate of Jefferson High School. Dave retired on his 48th birthday after 30 years at Rockwell International and was then able to devote his time fully as a farmer – his lifelong passion. In addition, Dave and Wanda also owned and operated Schweitzer Fertilizer Sales for many years. Dave honorably served our country in the United States Army as a Combat Engineer Sergeant during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Dresden, Dresden VFW Post 11072, Dresden American Legion Post 399, and the Old Gas & Steam Club. When he wasn’t planting or harvesting crops, Dave could be found each morning at the Dresden McDonald’s “Coffee Club”, enjoying time with his friends and catching up on the latest news.

Surviving is his loving wife and high school sweetheart, Wanda Powell Schweitzer, whom he married August 17, 1969; a daughter, Amy (Craig Wyman) Watson of Zanesville; a son, David (Alexis Larsen) Schweitzer of Dayton; a grandson, Braxton Watson; three sisters, Janice (Jim) Schneider, Jeanette (Bob) Curry and Pam (Rolland) Accord; two sisters-in-law, Phyllis (Dick) Biller and Martha (Larry) Shrigley and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by, a brother, Karl Schweitzer; a sister, Annie Priest; father-in-law, Martin Powell; mother-in-law, Hazel Powell and his adored high-energy corgi, Toby.

Calling hours were 2-4pm and 6-8pm on Tuesday, October 5, 2021, at the Dresden Chapel of Vensil & Chute Funeral Home, 714 Main Street.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, October 6, 2021, at 11:00 am with Pastor Joe Offenberger officiating.
