Not daunted by the constant challenges they face, the Tri-Valley girls varsity basketball team has been taking it all in stride as they continue through a 9 conference-game winning streak that has them aiming their sites at the top of the MVL. In the first two games of the year, the girls have been facing neighboring conference rivals and have walked away with wins both times.
In their first matchup of the year, the girls got on the bus to head off to New Lexington to face off against the Lady Panthers. In what is arguably one of the closest conference games these girls have played and it was definitely anybody’s game right up to the end.
The first quarter of play saw the Scotties going point for point with the home team defenders and battling down every minute on the clock as they finished the first period on top of the score by only one point at 6 – 5.
Just like the first period the remaining first half of the game was just as close with defenses on both sides fighting tooth and nail to limit the opposite team to four and five points respectively. But as the buzzer sounded for halftime the Lady Dawgs walked into the locker room with a two-point advantage with the scoreboard reading 11 – 9.
After the half, both teams hit the floor doubling down on their efforts and points as the third period of play saw the most points put up for the whole match on both sides of the court. Obviously, the Lady Panthers were wanting to take back the lead and push on for a win of their own but the Scotties were having none of it as they ended the period up 30 – 26.
The final period of play saw the New Lex team step up and almost take the win for themselves but they fell just short of a full recovery when the final buzzer sounded with the Lady Dawgs up 42 – 41 and their 8th straight conference win.
Lexi Howe had a great night against New Lex as she put up 23 points including three treys for the game.
The next stop on the girls’ road trip found them at nearby River View for their second MVL match against the Lady Black Bears in a game that saw the Scottie defense in full form as they held their opponents to single digits per quarter.
With their heads spinning the River View girls were in for quite a game as the Scotties blew past them in the first quarter and shut them out as they rang the scoreboard for a 9 – 0 lead heading into the second.
The second period of play didn’t bring a break for the Warsaw team as the Lady Dawgs just kept rolling and blocking leaving the Black Bear team in the dust as they headed to the halftime locker rooms up 24 – 2.
Halftime didn’t bring the rally that the Lady Black Bears would have hoped for, and it certainly didn’t slow down the Scotties as they nearly doubled their first-half score in one play period while the defense kept River View to just 6 points for the quarter. The Lady Dawgs headed into the final quarter of play with a hefty 42 – 8 lead.
River View more than doubled their score in the final period of play but was unable to hold back the onrush of Scottie shots and they fell to the Dawgs with a final score of 50 – 17.
