Dresden Has Lost A Friend, A Benefactor

by Paul D. Lacey

Many of the folks reading this won’t recognize this person. Some who do won’t remember his name. But he was a friend to Dresden and he was a very good friend of mine. And his passing is a loss to us all.

On June 2, 2022, Alvin B. King of Cypress, Texas, after a long valiant fight against the worse form of Leukemia, went to meet his maker. Alvin, better known around these parts as “The Judge” first came to Dresden in 2014. He immediately fell in love with the town and its people basically adopting it as his second hometown after Lake Charles, LA. Over the next several years he would make several wonderful road trips to Dresden. Alvin made friends with everyone. He became friends with both our former and current Mayor, our Chief of Police, our Postmaster, and at the time our Sports Editor for the now-defunct Dresden Post Transcript. He befriended many of the folks at the Dresden American Legion thereby deciding to become a member of Dresden Sons of the American Legion in honor of his father’s service. Over the years, unbeknownst to most, he donated to many of the town’s events including Homecoming, Friends of the Dresden Park, the flags purchased for the Tri-Valley school, the sponsor signs at the swimming pool, and many individual fundraisers for people in need. He played an instrumental role in saving the bound copies of the Post Transcript for future generations. He made many friends. He was my friend. I will miss him. So will Dresden!
