Genesis HealthCare System Named as a Top Ten Hospital and Everest Award Winner

Genesis HealthCare System has been named to the 2022 Fortune Magazine/Merative 100 Top Hospitals® list and also awarded their Everest Award. This is the second time Genesis Hospital has been recognized with this honor as one of the top-performing Large Community Hospitals in the U.S. and the first time receiving the Everest Award. The annual list was published last week by Fortune magazine.

“These exceptional awards belong to our entire community, our doctors, nurses and our complete Genesis team” said Matthew Perry, President and CEO of Genesis HealthCare System. “The entire Genesis team has worked tirelessly to achieve this level of clinical and operational performance for our community and our patients. We are honored to take care of our community and humbled that we have received these honors because of the trust you put in us each day.”

Merative, formerly IBM Watson Health, is a data, analytics and technology partner for the healthcare industry. For the past 28 years, they have identified the top hospitals from a rigorous evaluation of 2,650 short-term, acute care, non-federal hospitals in the U.S. The annual list recognizes excellence in clinical outcomes, operational efficiency, patient experience and financial health.

According to Merative, the hospitals included on the Fortune magazine/Merative 100 Top Hospitals list had the best results on key clinical and operational performance indicators compared to similar hospitals. These include survival rates, patient complications, healthcare-associated infections, 30-day mortality and 30-day hospital-wide readmission rates, length of stay, throughput in emergency departments, inpatient expenses, profitability, and ratings from patients.

The Fortune magazine/Merative 100 Top Hospitals lists also incorporates a community health measure into its ranking process. For the community health measure, hospitals were surveyed across three components: 1) assessing hospital contributions to community health as a provider of critical services for community health and preventive care; 2) identifying ways that hospitals contribute to community health as a community partner teaming up with local organizations to implement critical programs; and 3) focusing on ways that hospitals promote community health through their practices as anchor institutions supporting local economic and social progress.

The Everest Award winners are a special group of the 100 Top Hospitals award winners that, in addition to achieving the Top 100 Award status for one year, have simultaneously set national benchmarks for the fastest long-term improvement on key clinical and operational performance indicators. In 2022, Genesis was one of only 25 organizations to achieve this level of performance. The methodology for selecting the Everest Award winners is based on a five-year (2016-2020) trending methodology to select the hospitals that have shown the fastest, most consistent improvement rates on the same set of performance measures.
