Dresden’s VFW Post 11072 got some much-needed replacements for their Honor Guard rifles on Wednesday, September 14th.
“The rendering of Military Funeral Honors is a ceremony representing the Nation’s deep gratitude to those, in times of war and peace, who have faithfully defended our country. This ceremonial paying of respect is the final demonstration a grateful nation can provide to our veteran’s family.” as stated by the VFW.
Over the years, the Honor Guard has been traditionally outfitted with the M-1 rifle which is a 9 – 11lb rifle issued during World War II and the Korean War and were provided to the various posts by the US Military. These rifles while sufficient at the time have obviously been growing more and more troublesome as parts availability and overall wear takes a toll on them. Many guard units have had issues with misfires, jams, and other problems that may seem normal, but in the context of their use can be very embarrassing to the guard members who want to honor their fallen brothers and sisters.
Seeing the rise in need for new rifles the Veterans Appreciation Foundation of Zanesville decided to step up to provide new rifles for different Honor Guards in Muskingum County. The Veterans Appreciation Foundation was created to support, honor and engage in awareness and appreciation through activities and programs aspiring to improve the quality of life for Veterans and their families in Zanesville, Muskingum County and the surrounding area.
The group provided seven new AR-15 rifles to VFW Post 11072. The rifles are brand new and are much lighter and easier to maintain and repair compared to their World War II counterparts. So far this year VAF has provided 33 rifles throughout the county.
Families of eligible veterans can request funeral honors through their local funeral director. For families that are not using a funeral director, contact the appropriate Military Service Coordinator.
