In February 2023, the Washington Post ranked New Concord as the 24th Ultimate College Town. To continue to strengthen the connection between the Village of New Concord and the campus community, the Friends of New Concord is hosting New Concord Community Day. On Saturday, Sept. 2 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., the community is invited to a day full of activities.
The day starts with a Vendors’ Village from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. where artisans will be selling a variety of locally made products from jewelry, clothing, soaps, and home décor to nuts, home-baked cookies, and more. Artisans will be set up in the Genesis Primary Care parking lot. There also will be activities for kids including a coloring contest and yard games. Families also can enjoy a horse-drawn carriage ride through New Concord.
Also, beginning at 10 a.m. New Concord businesses with goods or services that would benefit students are opening their doors to Muskingum University students. This is an opportunity for University students to get to know the Village, and for the business to introduce themselves to students.
At 1 p.m., the community is invited to Muskingum University’s football season home opener, where community members will receive free admission. The Friendship 7 a cappella group will perform the national anthem. Everyone is invited to cheer on the Fighting Muskies.
After the football game, there is a Party in the Park at New Concord War Memorial Park. The event will have live music from Fly Ohio and the Steve Spires Band. There also will be a rock-climbing wall, axe throwing, corn hole tournaments, and other yard games. There will be food trucks selling dinner and dessert items as well as a bonfire to cap off the evening. For adults with a valid ID, the Guernsey Brewhouse will be selling beer in a designated beer garden. The Party in the Park goes until 10 p.m.
“I am excited the Friends of New Concord is hosting this inaugural Community Day,” said New Concord Mayor Jennifer Lyle. “It is a great opportunity for the Village community and the University community to come together for a day of fun. I encourage everyone in the surrounding areas to join us.”
All events throughout the day include free admission, and there is no cost to participate in any of the games or activities.
