Newark Upsets Rival Zanesville With a Big Victory For the Wildcats

In a game between two teams that seemed decided before it began, Newark walked away with a 35 – 21 point upset on Friday, August 18th, at John D. Sulsberger Memorial Stadium in Zanesville.

For Zanesville, #23 Drew Doyle grabbed the first touchdown putting the Blue Devils on the board after the PAT at 7 – 0.

Shortly after the scoring began, Newark’s own Steele Meister grabbed a touchdown for the Wildcats tying up the score at 7 – 7 to wrap up the first quarter.

The second quarter saw the Blue Devils gain another touchdown at the hands of Drew Doyle taking the lead against Newark with the PAT to make the score 14 – 7 Zanesville.

On a long pass # 9 Jae Geiger from the Blue Devils lineup carried the ball in to the end zone and boosted the lead to 21 – 7 Devils after the extra point.

Newark answered back first with a lengthy pass for a touchdown by Wildcat #2 Drayson Peterson to bring the lead down to 21 – 14 Zanesville. Next up Steele Meister runs in a short quarterback keeper touchdown to even up the game at 21 all. Just minutes later Meister lands a pass in the hands of #8 Preston Lunsford for another long touchdown to take back the lead at 28 – 21 to end the first half of the game.

The second half of the game was more of a struggle for both teams with Newark’s Steele Meister managing to take another quarterback keeper into the end zone to finish out scoring for the game at 35 – 21.

The Blue Devils move on to face Louisville at home on Friday, August 25th. Kickoff is at 7pm at John D. Sulsberger Memorial Stadium. Following their next home game they will be hitting the road to visit St. Clairsville on Friday, September 1st, at 7pm.
