Airplanes and automobiles celebrated at 23rd annual Fly-in, Drive-in, and Cruise-in

EAA Vintage Chapter 22 brought another fun-filled day of over 250 vehicles including aircraft to the skies and grounds of the Zanesville Municipal Airport on September 23, 2023. The annual event is a fundraiser for the non-profit organization whose mission is to keep grass roots aviation alive through events like the Fly-in, Drive-in, and Cruise-in.

For just a donation made at the gate, attendees were treated to an amazing spectacle. It seemed like every era, make and model were represented at the cruise-in. Antique cars dating back to the Model T days from newer Lamborghinis and pretty much everything in between were present. The skies were abuzz with planes and helicopters flying overhead before landing at the airport where many more were on display. Inside the Hanger 2 you could find a model trains & model engine show. Entertainment including the Schubach Big Band and Dancing Divas were also part of the day’s agenda. A variety of food was also available for purchase.

The winner of the Ohio Homebuilt Airplane contest went to John & Tiffany Meyers of Pickerington, OH with their build project of the Vans RV12 iS which they completed in 2022. Marc Vance won the Ohio Manufactured Airplane contest with his 1969 American Aviation Model AA-1. For the automobiles, President’s Choice went to Alan Lemity for his 1937 Chrysler Airflow, First place in Best of Show was awarded to Peggy Brennan for her 1955 Chevy Nomad, second place was Dave Schafer and his 1956 Ford Victoria, and in third place was Mike Snode with his 1930 Model A Ford. The Oldest Vehicle award was presented to Josh Leasure for his 1917 Ford. All Presidents Choice, Best of Show, and Oldest Vehicle winners reside in the Zanesville, Ohio area.

Besides just watching the aircraft, for a charge attendees could also take to the skies by either helicopter rides operated by Havens Aviation or by biplane with pilot Dewy Davenport of Goodfolk & O’Tyme Biplane Rides.

The event will be held again next year on the last Saturday in September.
