Lady Muskies Triumphed Over Defiance In Saturday Shutout Game

After their big win against Bluffton last week, the Muskies women’s soccer team met up with Earlham on their home field on Wednesday, September 20th, during their Muskie Pride game.

In true Muskie Pride fashion junior Morgan Meisel started off the scoring with an assist from teammate Maggie Short for the game against the Quakers just over a minute into the game to take an early lead 1 – 0.

It took over twenty minutes for Earlham to be able to answer back with their first goal of the game when Alyssa Jennings took a successful shot off of an assist from Mallory Smith to tie up the game at 1 – 1.

Meisel was not going to let their lead go so easily as she landed another shot in the net off of an assist by Isabelle Arnett-Toma just a few minutes later to take the lead back at 2 – 1 and they carried the lead into intermission.

After the break, Meisel buffered the Muskies lead with a shot from an assist by Hannah Ritchie to set the score at 3 – 1 Muskingum.

With just a few minutes left in the game it looked like the Muskies were going to take the win but the Quakers came out of their slumber and took two goals back to back off of Natalie Beckes and Noelle Hooper to tie the game at 3 – 3 and end scoring for the day.

Meisel recorded her 20th career goal as a Muskie and also got her first hat trick of her career. The Muskies tallied 21 shots, and seven corner kicks.

On the following Saturday, September 23rd, the Muskies faced the visiting Defiance Yellow Jackets. The game proved to be a great pickup for Muskingum as they shutout their opponents and dominated the field.

Isabelle Cadogan took the first strike against the Yellow Jackets just 17 minutes into the game to take an early 1 – 0 lead. Gracie McNeal stepped up near the end of the first half to grab a goal off of an assist by teammate Hannah Ritchie to set the score for the half at 2 – 0 Muskies. For the first half of the game Muskingum had 13 total shots on goal.

The second half of the game nearly went scoreless for both teams as Defiance stepped up their defense but just near the end of the period Muskie Morgan Meisel shot a goal off of an assist by Ritchie to finish their scoring at 3 – 0 for the shutout.

For the game Muskingum’s Gracyn Armstrong saved the loan shot on goal from Defiance, while Yellow Jacket Sarah O’Shea saved 22 of the 25 Muskie shots on goal.

On the road against Kenyon College the Muskies took a hard 4 – 0 loss, during the game goalie Gracyn Armstrong saved 8 of 11 shots on goal while teammate Kelly Buck saved 8 of 9 shots.

In a tough home contest against Heidelberg on Saturday, September 30th, the Muskies suffered a tough loss against a closely matched team that almost went shot for shot with both goalies, Brigid Enright (Heidelberg) getting three saves, and Keyleigh Dahlgren (Muskingum) getting three as well. Unfortunately mid-way through the first half, Heidelberg was able to slip a shot through to get the 1 – 0 lead that they held onto throughout the rest of the game.
