The Lil’ Muskies wrapped up their season after a very eventful playoff run that saw them push all the way to the Division II Regional Semi-Finals before being stopped, or even scored on. Coach Clay Wilkins team ended their season with a massive 15-5-1 record overall and the MVL title record of 8 – 1 and the Division II District Title was the icing on top.
John Glenn vs Steubenville (10/19)
At home in New Concord on Thursday John Glenn took on playoff opponent Steubenville. JG came into the game with a 12-4-1 record overall vs Steubenville’s record of 9 – 9 overall
Right from the start the Lil’ Muskies asserted their dominance as they took control of the ball and pushed toward the goal where Riley Zamensky found the net off of an assist by Estelle Matheney for the early 1 – 0 lead with 37:45 left to play in the period. Zamensky came back just a few minutes later for an unassisted goal that put the John Glenn up 2 – 0.
With just under two minutes left until halftime Zamensky completed a hat-trick off of an assist by teammate Layken Cochran to send the Steubenville team to intermission with a 3 – 0 deficit.
After the break, Becca Spohn stepped up to put the ball in the net with help from Kira Kaiser just minutes into the period, JG 4 – Steubenville 0.
With just over thirty minutes left in the match, Zamensky hit pay-dirt with help from Kira Kaiser for the fourth time in the game, JG 5.
Riley wrapped up scoring for the game when she landed her fifth and final goal for he day cementing John Glenn’s 6 – 0 shutout victory over Steubenville.
For the game, goalkeeper Faith Lemon had 3 saves off of 3 shots on goal.
John Glenn vs River View (10/24)
On Tuesday, the Lady Black Bears met with the Lady Muskies to battle for the Division II District Semi-Final game on neutral ground in Coshocton, Ohio.
After battling back and forth Riley Zamensky grabbed a goal off of a “Bean” Sowers assist to set the stage with a 1 – 0 lead.
The two teams battled it out for the majority of the period, both holding their ground until Zamensky found the net again with the help of Estelle Matheney with just over four minutes left in the first period. The two teams went into intermission with John Glenn holding a 2 – 0 lead.
After the half, Riley Zamensky was able to complete a hat-trick with help from “Bean” Sowers again punching up their lead to 3 with 26:24 left in the game.
Five minutes later, Estelle Matheney set up Kira Kaiser for a successful shot on the goal to make the score John Glenn 4 – River View 0.
The final goal of the game was made by Lady Muskie Layken Cochran as she was assisted by Estelle Matheney to shut out the Lady Black Bears and take home the final score of 5 – 0.
For the game Faith Lemon had 3 saves on 3 shots for the Ladie Muskies.
John Glenn vs Dover (10/26)
For the District Title matchup, John Glenn had to travel back to Coshocton’s Stewart Field to face the Dover Crimson Tornadoes who came into the game with a 12-5-2 overall record.
For the first period of the game, the two teams battled back and forth for the majority of the time with one penalty kick from Dover that was saved by Faith Lemon for the Lil’ Muskies.
In the second half of the game both defensive strategies were working as neither team could seem to penetrate the goal box and the game was forced into sudden victory overtime.
Even in fifteen minutes of overtime play the teams could not shake their defenders and the game was pushed into a second overtime round.
As the second overtime round seemed to be raging on with each team battling and possession flipping back and forth, John Glenn leading scorer Riley Zamensky found her way to the net with help from Olivia Perrin with only 7:44 left in the period to end the title bout with a 1 – 0 victory!
For the game goalkeeper Faith Lemon had 3 saves on 3 shots on goal while Dover’s Elizabeth Lane had 3 saves on 4 shots.
John Glenn was awarded the Division II District Title trophy along with individual medals for the game against Dover.
John Glenn vs West Holmes (10/31)
On the road again, the Lady Muskies traveled to Millersburg, Ohio to take on West Holmes High School for the Division II Regional Semi-Final game.
The Knights came into the game with a 16 – 3 overall record and were ready for a battle as they took their District Title with a 7 – 0 shutout victory over Zanesville.
Riley Zamensky took the first goal with a shot assisted by Estelle Matheney with midway through the first period of play setting the Lil’ Muskies up with a 1 – 0 lead which held just shy of the intermission when West Holmes Charlie Murphy hit the net with just 29 seconds left in the half to tie the game.
The Knights didn’t waste any time after the break as Murphy came back for a second goal that put West Holmes in the lead with a 2 – 1 score, followed by two more goals that gave her a hat-trick plus one and pushed the score to WH 3 – JG 1.
Zamensky tried to answer back for John Glenn but was only able to land one more goal off of an assist by Kira Kaiser to round out the scoring for the game dropping the match 4 – 2 to the Knights and ending their playoff run for the season.
For the game Faith Lemon had 6 saves on 10 shots, while West Holmes’ Brianna Parks had 1 save on 3 shots.
