Muskingum University football team faced a couple of rough games against Ohio Northern and John Carroll. The team ends out October with a 3 – 5 record overall with 340.3 total yards, 123.9 rushing and 216.4 passing. In the conference, the Muskies are 2 – 5.
Muskingum vs Ohio Northern (10/21)
Two seniors broke Muskingum University records on Saturday during the game against ONU. Zuri Edmondson pushed his career receiving yards to 2,173, ranking first all-time at Muskingum. Ja’Lin Goodman tied the school record for longest kickoff return for a touchdown with his 98-yard score late in the third quarter.
The Muskies were the first to light up the scoreboard at the Bullock Health and Wellness Complex in New Concord when Hunter Albers kicked a 21-yard field goal to grab 3 points with just 2:10 left in the first quarter.
Ohio Northern took the lead from Muskingum with just 14 seconds left in the first quarter with a 39-yard touchdown pass from Brennon Norris to Hunter Kesler.
Shortly into the second period, ONU grabbed another three points when Jonmich Elliott hit a 28-yard field goal setting the score at 10 – 3 against Muskingum heading into halftime.
After the half, Elliot lined up another 21-yard field goal to increase the Ohio Northern lead to 13 – 3.
Nearing the end of the third quarter ONU receiver Jordan Dean caught a 37-yard pass from Norris to give the Polar Bears a 20 – 3 lead, but on the kickoff back to Muskingum J. Goodman caught the ball at the 2 yard line and carried it back for a whopping 98-yard touchdown to decrease the deficit to 20 – 10 with just 3:36 left in the third quarter.
The fourth quarter of the game went mostly scoreless until Louis Blasiole made a quick 2-yard run in to make the score ONU 27 – MU 10 with just 2:28 left on the clock.
With 1:23 left the Muskies T. Roberson caught an 11-yard pass from Doug Crawford to make the score 27 – 17 but the Muskies ran out of time for a proper comeback and ONU went home with the victory.
Muskingum vs John Carroll (10/28)
On the road at University Heights, Ohio the Muskies headed to Don Shula Stadium at Wasmer Field to face the nationally ranked John Carroll Blue Streaks.
Just like in the previous game, Muskingum took the first strike with just 4:55 left in the first quarter as Ja’Lin Goodman caught a short pass from Jayden Young to grab a touchdown and set the lead 6 – 0 for the Muskies after missing the extra point.
Just over a minute later, John Carroll answered back with a 63-yard pass from Joe Collins to Brennan Fugh to set the score at 7 – 6 JCU after the kick with just 3:36 left in the first.
At the beginning of the second quarter, the Blue Streaks picked up the pace with a huge 99-yard pass from Collins to Joe Torok to take a 14 – 6 lead.
John Carroll forced their lead to 21 – 6 when Collins found Brennan again for a 32-yard pass to paydirt with 6:50 left in the half.
Goodman caught a 7-yard pass from Doug Crawford to notch the lead from JCU down to 21 – 13 with just 3:36 left until halftime, but Collins hit Lucas D’Orazio for a 7-yard pass for John Carroll with just 16 seconds left to keep the difference at 15 going into the half with a score of 28 – 13.
John Carroll had a touchdown for each of the last two quarters while shutting out the Muskies offense to finish the game with a score of 42 – 13.
Muskingum will host Wilmington for Senior Day on Saturday, November 4th. Gametime is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at the Bullock Health and Wellness Complex and will feature Muskingum’s Student-Athlete Committee’s Fall Sports Faculty/Staff/Family Appreciation event.
