Muskingum University women’s basketball breaks sixty points a game in season opener and home opener triumphs

Muskingum vs Waynesburg (11/09)

On the road against Waynesburg, the Fighting Muskies did just that with a 63 – 51 victory. Junior Caitlyn DeMassimo had a double-double with 15 points and 15 rebounds.

Lizzy Allen was the first to find the net for the game as Muskingum took a 2-point lead. Kara McFadden landed a 3-point jump shot for Waynesburg followed by a Muskies layup by Caitlyn Demassimo to set the score to 4 – 3. Claudia Harrington rose the score to 7 for Muskingum with Demassimo putting 2 more points on the board to hold steady at 9 – 3 Muskies. Harrington nudged the score to 11 as Waynesburg closed in at 8 points. Muskingum’s Courtney Hivick got fouled, giving the women a 13 – 8 advantage after the two successful free throws. McKinzi Linscott made the final layup for the period leaving the 1st quarter score at 15 – 8.

In the second quarter, Tori Jones hit a trey to start creating the first ten-point lead of the game at 18 – 8 against Waynesburg. Linscott hit a three-point jump shot, 21 – 8 Muskingum.

Marley Wolf threw in a pair of layups for Waynesburg setting the score at 21 – 12, followed by a two-point shot by Madisen Dayton, 21 – 14.

Harrington hit another trey with just 5 minutes left in the half to pad the lead 24 – 14.

Tori Wesolowski made a layup for Waynesburg 24 – 16 Muskingum. And after landing 1 of 2 free throws Courtney Hivick raised the score to 25. Marley came back for a layup 25 – 18.

With 2:31 left in the first half of the game Kara McFadden shot the score to 25 – 20 after her layup.

Halle Morehead answered back with a three-pointer for Muskingum and the 28 – 20 tally.

Allison Bailey made the final score for Waynesburg in the first half of the game when she hit a layup setting the score at 28 – 22.

Taylor Demassimo hit three points with just 1 second left in the half to send Waynesburg to the locker room down 31 – 22.

Caitlyn Demassimos’s layup increased the Muskie’s lead to 33 – 22. Demassimo came back with another just a few minutes later to get two more points, while teammate Claudia Harrington’s layup made the total 37 – 22.

Waynesburg tried to catch the Lady Muskies but the could only narrow the gap to 44 – 36 by the end of the third quarter of play.

Muskingum kept Waynesburg at a ten-point disadvantage almost halfway through the fourth quarter. The Yellow Jackets closed the gap to within a four-point game but Muskingum pulled ahead again to end the game up 63 – 51.

Junior Caitlyn DeMassimo led the Muskies with 15 points on 5-of-11 shooting grabbed 15 rebounds and had a block and a steal on defense. Sophomore Claudia Harrington hit double digits with 13 points, five rebounds, and three assists. Junior Halle Morehead and sophomore Tori Jones each scored nine points. Freshman McKinzi Linscott had six points and three offensive rebounds. Sophomore Lizzy Allen had five points, five assists, and nine rebounds. Senior Taylor DeMassimo and sophomore Courtney Hivick had three points each.

Muskingum vs Bethany (11/11)
Muskingum University women’s basketball overpowered Bethany in their home opener game at the Steele Center on Saturday.

The Bisons held the Muskies at bay as long as they could, holding the lead in the first quarter for a good six minutes or so but thanks to seven treys by Harrington, DeMassimo, Allen, and Jones, the Fighting Muskies bounced back to take a 17 – 14 lead into the second quarter.

The two teams went shot-for-shot in the second quarter leading to a near even 35 – 31 score at the halftime buzzer as Muskingum walked off of the court with the advantage.

The third quarter is when the Muskies really started to take over as they increased their lead to nine points overall with a 53 – 44 score going into the final quarter of play.

During the final period, Muskingum kept the Bisons at a 10-point deficit almost the entire period answering every layup and 3-point shot with a match of their own finishing out the game with a score of 67 – 55 over Bethany.

Sophomore Tori Jones led the scoring with 16 points going 4-of-7 from beyond the arc. Junior Caitlyn DeMassimo had 15 points, 11 rebounds, and three assists. Sophomore Claudia Harrington had nine points, six rebounds, and two steals. Senior Taylor DeMassimo and junior Halle Morehead had eight points each and Morehead had three steals. Sophomore Courtney Hivick had six points, and sophomore Lizzy Allen had five points.

Muskingum will travel to Trine for their next matchup on Saturday, November 18th. Expect them back on home court in the Steele Center on Wednesday, November 29th as they take on Ohio Wesleyan during their Hoops for Hunger Food Drive.
