John Glenn boys basketball picked up two big MVL wins going into the holiday break; Philo working to strengthen program as season progresses

The Lil’ Muskies have been on a roll with their season pickup up steam. So far this season they have come out above every challenger except for Tri-Valley who they hope to get a shot at evening that score on January 30th. Most of their games have been a pretty even matchup aside from Philo who they handed a big loss to on Tuesday.

John Glenn vs Philo(12/19)

Right from the start Philo knew that the visitors to the Power Plant were going to get a lot to handle and the Lil’ Muskies were just that, pushing through the first quarter and gaining a quick 25 – 11 lead with Caleb Larrick scoring six points for John Glenn in the quarter and a couple of well-placed treys by Cooper Briggs and Noah Winland.

In the second period of play the Electrics stepped up a little with by putting up 14 points but the Muskies just kept piling on the points leaving the Philo team with a 47 – 25 deficit going into halftime. For the quarter Cooper Briggs dropped in two treys for the Lil’ Muskies while teammates D’Amare Fowler and Stehl Bates each had a trey of their own.

When the game resumed, the Lil’ Muskies were still in their stride breaking down a 19-point quarter while holding the Electrics to just seven points, all of which were scored by Philo’s #10 player Cooper Radcliffe. For John Glenn Bates picked up two three-pointers and Fowler had one.

Already leading the game by an insurmountable 66 – 32 the Lil’ Muskies decided to use second-string players to finish the game. The Electrics made a little headway in the fourth gaining 11 points and holding John Glenn at 4, but the damage was done and the New Concord team grabbed the 70 – 43 victory. Philo’s final push was made possible by two three-pointers by Rusty Trout and L. Lyon.

Philo vs Tri-Valley (12/15)

The Electrics traveled to nearby Coach Rich Longaberger Court in Dresden to take on the Tri-Valley Scotties. Hoping for a good matchup, the Philo team was soon to realize that the game was not going to go their way as Tri-Valley was landing a bevy of shots. They tried with all they had, but by the end of the game the Electrics got back on the bus and headed home with a defeat of 76 – 41 despite a valiant effort by Talon Preston and Rusty Trout who each put up 11 points a piece.

John Glenn vs Sheridan(12/15)

New Concord was host to the visiting Sheridan Generals on Friday and the Lil’ Muskies were feeling up to the challenge. The Generals came into the game with an equal record to John Glenn and from the start of the matchup both teams were going head-to-head and shot-for-shot with Sheridan taking the early lead of 10 – 6 by the end of the first quarter.

With the momentum already rolling in their direction, the Generals picked up the pace in the second quarter more than doubling the Lil’ Muskies’ score for the period and sending them to the halftime break behind 31 – 16.

Coach Sheck must of had a great speech planned for the locker room because the players that came back out onto the court were not the same. Right from the start the Muskies started picking up points left and right while holding off the Generals, by the end of the third period they had completely flipped the script on the last period of play and took a 22 – 11 lead for the quarter putting them just two shots behind.

Both teams played pretty evenly in the fourth quarter but in the end, the Muskies wanted it more and pulled ahead with a final score of 53 – 52 wrapping up a very suspenseful game.
