The Fighting Muskies men’s basketball team gets hit with two tough losses as 2024 begins

Muskingum vs Ohio Northern (1/06)

The Polar Bears from Ohio Northern University made the Saturday trip to New Concord to play at the Steele Center against the Fighting Muskies. The first half of the game was very much an even playing field as neither team got more than eight points away from their challengers. The score was tied up during the first period a total of seven times. When the buzzer finally sounded the score landed at an even 39 points for each team.

The second half of the game was a carbon copy of the first half with both team’s offense and defense firing on all cylinders as the game clock wound down. Muskingum took the lead at the beginning of the half but by the time it was over they arrived at 78 points for both opponents sending the game into overtime.

Early in overtime, the Polar Bears took a three-point lead and just started to slowly add to it so that by the end of the five-minute period they had built a 90 – 82 final score taking the victory.

Sophomore Duane Davis led the Muskies in scoring with 23 points, seven rebounds, and a block. Freshman Owen Emig had 21 points and three rebounds. Sophomore Kaelan Pulliam landed 13 points, two rebounds, and a steal. Sophomore Alex Coffey scored six points and grabbed a rebound. Freshman Reed Coconis made six points, four assists, three rebounds, and two steals. Senior Luken Hill had five points, five assists, and two rebounds. Freshman Nathan Walker had four points, eight rebounds, and two steals. Walker also went 4-of-4 from the free-throw line.

Muskingum vs Marietta (1/03)

The Muskies hit the road on Wednesday headed to Marietta to face the Pioneers at Ban Johnson Arena. Marietta came into the game with a record of 10-2 overall to Muskingums 4 – 8. Marietta took the lead in the early part of the first half of play, but the Muskies were able to tie up the score about halfway through the first period. Unfortunately, Muskingum couldn’t hold back the Pioneers and they continued their climb up the scoreboard as the half wound down the Muskies were at a 47 – 32 disadvantage going into the break.

The end of the halftime intermission brought the two teams back to the court and try as hard as they could, the Muskies could not catch the Marietta team as they continued to hold their lead throughout the period. As the clock ticked down on the game, the Muskies brought the score within six points but that was as close as they could get and they headed home with an 88 – 82 defeat.

Sophomore Kaelan Pulliam led the team with 16 points, four rebounds, and two blocks. Sophomore Duane Davis had 15 points, five rebounds, three assists, and a steal. Freshman Owen Emig grabbed 14 points, two rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Freshman Reed Coconis tied his season high with 11 points, three assists, and two rebounds. Senior Luken Hill scored nine points, seven rebounds, an assist, and a steal. Junior Ethan Taylor had six points, two assists, a rebound, and a block. Sophomore Logan Stotzer totaled five points, three rebounds, and one assist. Freshman Nathan Walker scored four points, two assists, and a rebound.
