Mother-daughter artists Debbie Haines and Jessica Rohr collaborate to reopen Mindscapes gallery in the Y-Bridge Cultural Arts Center which is located at 8 Main Street in Zanesville. The high ceilings and mixture of glass windows and brick walls provide a stunning roomy space that elegantly features artwork created by both artists.
Although the official grand opening is not planned until next month, the duo debuted their new gallery during the inaugural First Friday Art Walk of 2024. The Y-Bridge Cultural Arts Center is made up of a wide array of artwork spanning various artistic mediums from local artists. It is one of many buildings dedicated to showcasing the talents and creativity of artists within the area in Zanesville’s rich art district.
Haines and Rohr originally opened Mindscapes in 2017. At that time it was located with other artist’s galleries in the Zanesville Masonic Temple. Almost exactly two years ago on January 6, 2022, the building was lost to a fire. Like many of the artists who had work on display in the Masonic Temple, the devastation of the fire meant a new home was needed for their gallery.
“I really fell in love with the art community of Zanesville. Not only is there a lot of support for the arts, but the overall atmosphere is very welcoming and accepting of all types of both people and art. I’m honored to have the opportunity to open a new gallery in Zanesville because it establishes a connection that allows us to be a part of that community of amazing people,” explained Rohr.
As a self-taught watercolor artist, Rohr has been creating artwork for about 20 years. She describes her work as a mixture of fantasy and surrealism that focuses on capturing both the light and dark sides of the mind. The inspiration that she draws from mythology and nature is evident in her works.
Haines is also a self-taught artist. She uses acrylic, pastels, and mixed media in her artwork. Nature, landscapes, and still life are among the types of subject matter portrayed in her art. Her style combines all of that with abstract and textural backgrounds for one-of-a-kind creations.
“Our vision for the gallery is to offer a fun, creative, and inspiring space where people can view, explore, and shop our artwork and other creations in a relaxed and welcoming environment,” said Rohr.
Both Haines and Rohr have been recognized through the years for their exemplary talent in the art community. Jessica’s most recent achievement was receiving an honorable mention for “The Herald of Winter” which she entered into the 2023 Y-Bridge Arts Festival Best of Show Competition. In 2019 at the same show, she received first place for her work titled “The Ascension of the Sun”.
The Y-Bridge Cultural Arts Center is open by appointment and during Downtown Zanesville’s First Friday Art Walk hosted by ArtCOZ on the first Friday of every month from 5 to 8 pm.
