Maysville Panthers make their way to the final four for the first time in over 50 years

Maysville vs Warren (03/16) (Regional Championship)

Back at Ohio University in Athens the Panthers were ready to play against the Warren Warriors.  Warren outpowered the Panthers early on taking a six-point lead to end the first quarter up 16 – 10 over Maysville.

The Panthers were hoping to take the lead in the second quarter but their opponents were still very much in control of the ball and dominating the court pushing the Maysville defense around.  After a hard-fought quarter for both teams, the Warriors took a healthy 32 – 17 lead into halftime.

As both teams came back to the court the Panthers offense really started to dominate the court on their side, showing that the game was not going to be over that quickly.  It was looking like Maysville may just take the lead but they fell one point short of a tie by the end of the third quarter taking a one-point shortage of 45 – 44.

With a breakaway charge, the Panthers kept on their path, turning the tables on the Warriors and taking their turn at dominating the game.  Not only did the Panthers tie the game, they took over the court and blew past the Warrior’s defense to build a 28-point quarter and take the victory with a score of 72 – 64. The win brought home not just a trophy but the first Regional Title win for Maysville since 1971.

There were many contributors to the game’s success with Alex Bobb taking the lead with 18 points, five rebounds, and two assists.  Gator Nichols had 17 points, one rebound, five assists, and one steal.  Wesley Armstead and Jordyn Watson each had 14 points, Watson had seven rebounds and Armstead had four, each had three assists and one steal.

With the win, Maysville moves on to the Ohio Final Four Playoff Game to be held at the University of Dayton Arena on Saturday, March 23rd against the Shelby Whippets to determine who will be in the State Final game for Division II.

Top scorer Alex Bobb was locked into “the zone” during the District Championship playoff game against the Indian Valley Braves.

Maysville vs Bishop Hartley (03/14)

For Thursday’s neutral game, the Panthers joined the Hawks on the court at Ohio University in Athens to see who would carry on in the playoffs.  Bishop Hartley was taking no prisoners as they dominated the game from the tipoff grasping a 12 – 5 lead by the end of the first quarter.

Maysville doubled their efforts in the second quarter but the Hawks were still taking charge putting their challengers in a very difficult position, facing a 28 – 15 mountain that they would have to figure out how to climb over during the halftime break.

Back on the court, the Panthers sprang to life, narrowing the gap with every play they made dropping the 13-point lead that the Hawks had to just eight by the end of the third quarter, but they were still trailing 42 – 34 heading into the last quarter of play.

Alex Bobb and his teammates showed what they were made of in the final minutes of the game as they rallied with a 16 – 7 quarter against the Hawks with Bobb taking the final shot at the buzzer to win the game by one point at 50 – 49.

In the big win, Alex Bobb had 22 points, two rebounds, one assist, and one steal.  Jordyn Watson had 18 points, six rebounds, two assists, and one steal. Gator Nichols had 10 points, three rebounds, a pair of assists, and a pair of steals.

Maysville vs Indian Valley (03/09) (District Championship)

The Panthers met up with the Indian Valley Braves on Saturday at Zanesville High School’s Winland Memorial Gymnasium.  After taking their piece of the MVL title and then following that with the Sectional title win the boys were looking to go all the way!  Right out of the gate, Maysville was up to the challenge taking an early 11 – 9 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Braves were trying hard to catch up in the second quarter but just couldn’t rally enough stamina to keep up with the onslaught of points coming from the Panthers and they ended the first half down by a score of 25 – 18.

After the break, Maysville continued to punish the Gnadenhutten team by piling on point after point.  Even though the Braves had an impressive 11-point quarter, the Panthers put up 18 points of their own taking their lead to 43 – 29 by the end of the third.

The Braves were able to close the gap slightly in the last few minutes left on the clock bringing their deficit from 14 points down to just 10 but they were out of time and the Panthers took the 54 – 44 victory and the District Champions Title.

For the game, Alex Bobb had a score of 28 points, seven rebounds, two assists, and three steals.  Teammate Jordyn Watson had 10 points, three rebounds, two assists, and a block. Gator Nichols and Wesley Armstead rounded out the scoring with eight points a piece.
