Maysville basketball team brings home historic trophy after ending their season as the State Runner-Up

Maysville vs Archbishop Alter (03/24)

Still riding high on the momentum from Saturday’s game, the Panthers were hoping for a repeat to be able to take home the state trophy for the first time.  Paired up against the Knights from Archbishop Alter whose school was on their eleventh visit to the State Final game, Maysville definitely had their work cut out for them.  Despite the experience gap for the two teams they played about as equal as anyone could expect, with Alter taking a four point lead before the end of the first quarter.  The second quarter of play worked out much the same way as each team’s offense worked overtime and the Panthers went to the locker room down by just three points with the Knights leading 27 – 24.

Alter was in a higher gear after the break, pulling away early on and holding onto a 48 – 34 lead at the end of the third quarter.  Maysville tried hard to battle back but they were plagued with foul calls and not enough time on the clock to recover they walked away with the State Runner-Up Trophy and the ability to hold their heads high knowing that they left it all on the court!

“These kids were just a group that really loved each other and played for each other all the time we tell them a lot that the true soldier fights not because he hates what’s in front of him but because he loves what is behind him.  That is something I think this group really took to heart and they really did play for each other and it really is a family environment and each year we will try to continue that path and see where it takes us” stated head coach Dave Brown.

Maysville vs Shelby (03/23)

After making their way to the UD Arena Saturday to play in the State Playoff Tournament for the first time in 53 years the team from Maysville was determined to show that they deserved to be on the stage! From the tipoff both teams were shot-for-shot ending the first quarter tied at 18 points. By the end of the first half of the game Shelby had a three point advantage over Maysville at 36 – 33 going into halftime.

As both teams resumed play, Maysville quickly recovered from the deficit and went back to playin and block step by step against the Whippets ending the third quarter tied at 50.  Both teams fought hard to continue on, but there could be only one winner and the Panthers pulled it off at the last minute against Shelby winning by a three-point margin at 68 – 65 and moving on to the coveted State Final game.
