Maysville’s sophomore Bella Van Wey has been working hard this year to improve her throws for both shot put and discus and it shows walking away with fourth place in Division II State Discus and fourth place in Division II State shot put.
Both of her distances broke her previous school records, as she had a throw of 40-feet-11 3/4 inches in the shot and 138-feet-1 in the discus. She broke the records earlier in the season but then broke them three more times as she continued to throw.
Along with her State level accomplishments Bella got the Regional Title for shot put and was named the MVL Champion for both events as well as All-Ohio for both and Academic All-Ohio for both.
Bella has improved over last year with her discus throw going from 103’4 last year to her distance thrown at the state competition this year of 138’1 gaining over thirty feet in distance. Shot put has improved as well from 35’ 5.75 last year to this years distance of 40’ 11.75 improving by almost six feet. She attributes the improvements to her coach Dustin Young.
“Coach Young is great, he knows exactly what he’s talking about, and he is always there if I want to go throw” stated Bella.
Bella’s Mother Michele Van Wey has been watching from the sidelines as her daughter pushed herself to achieve her goals.
Michele said “This kid is a hard worker and I know every parent says that about their kid, but she plays volleyball, basketball, and she does track and before this year she did club basketball too. So she’s in a gym in a weight room seven days a week and Sundays are usually two-a-days for basketball and track so she works really hard, she spent the entire summer throwing last year and she is just determined she really wants to get D-1 for track. She’s a great student and she’s very humble, it makes me proud!”
Bella’s goals going forward are to increase her distance and to keep pushing to get better at the sport.
