Vs Athens doubleheader (6/8)
On the road on Saturday to Athens the Zanesville Post 29 Sr. Legion went to face the Athens Post 21 Sr. 18U team. Both teams’ defenses were on point for the first half of the game as the first three innings were completely scoreless. However, in the top of the fourth inning, the Legion’s batting lineup came to life as Wiseman hit a single scoring Winland, Watton hit a double scoring Wiseman, McGreevy hit a grounder scoring Williamson, and Philip hit a double that scored Watton, Huffman, and McGreevy to bust out a 6 – 0 lead. The rally continued in the top of the fifth inning with Lincicome opening the show with a single homer to left field, Riley singled scoring Wiseman, Huffman singled scoring Watton, Riley scored on a wild pitch, Philip singled scoring Huffman, and McGreevy scored on a passed ball to bust out the second of two six-run innings to take game one 12 – 0.
Game two started with a little more excitement as the teams went neck and neck with each scoring two runs in the first inning until the top of the third when Zanesville took the lead with an extra run, padding their lead with two more runs in the top of the fourth inning, all while holding Athens at their original two runs. The top of the fifth inning brought about the “hit by a pitch” support group. Willamson singled to score Lincicome followed by Philip scoring on catcher interference. Riley singled to score Wiseman. McGreevy was hit by a pitch to score Williamson. Winland was hit by a pitch to score Watton. Better was hit by a pitch to score Riley. McGreevy scored on a wild pitch. Winland scored on a grounder by Philip. Huffman scored on a wild pitch just before Wiseman was hit by a pitch. And finally, Philip scored on a passed ball to ramp Zanesville’s tally to 16 – 2 as they swept the doubleheader at Athens.
Vs Senior Pioneers (6/5)
Back at home on Wednesday, the Senior Legion team faced the Senior Pioneers at Gant Stadium. The Pioneers were the first to light the scoreboard with a run in the top of the first inning, but the Legion team answered back with two runs off of singles by Lincicome and King to give them the 2 – 1 lead. The Pioneers, however, rallied in the top of the second inning for four runs that pushed them up to a 5 – 2 lead, followed by their fifth and sixth run in the top of the next two innings. Zanesville Post 29 Sr. Legion tried to mount a comeback but landed just two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning falling short of tying the game, that added with the Pioneer’s five-rally in the top of the sixth inning sealed their fates as the Legion fell 12 – 4.
Vs Marietta doubleheader (6/2)
On Sunday Zanesville Post 29 Senior Legion team traveled to Marietta to play the Marietta Post 64 Legion in their hometown. Zanesville grabbed a run in the top of the first inning to light the scoreboard, but Marietta answered back with three runs of their own. In the top of the third inning, Nathan Better singled to right field bringing home Huffman. Post 64 smashed back with a huge five-run inning to take a 9 – 2 lead. Riley lit up his bat in the top of the fourth to fire a single into center field that brought in King and Stambush setting their tally at four runs. Marietta fired off another run in the bottom of the fourth and though Zanesville tried to rally in the top of the sixth inning they fell short with just one more run ending the game downed by Marietta 10 – 5.
Game two of the doubleheader had Zanesville nabbing the first run of the game again with a single to third base by Lincicome to bring in Hindel. Marietta came back to tie up the game and take the go-ahead run with a double by Sealey to take a 2 – 1 lead. Zanesville came back in the top of the second inning to take back the lead with a double and two singles to grab the 4 – 2 score. Marietta didn’t let that lead stand for long as they came back with a four-run inning to steal the lead back at 6 – 4. Post 64 tacked on another run in the bottom of the third inning to push their lead to 7 – 4. After a stale inning, Zanesville was able to grasp a run off of a double by Lincicome, but that would be their last and they fell in game two to Marietta with a score of 7 – 5.
Vs Coshocton doubleheader (6/1)
The Coshocton Cherokees Post 65 18U team traveled to Gant Stadium in downtown Zanesville on Saturday to face the Zanesville Post 29 Sr. Legion for a doubleheader. Game one started off slowly with a scoreless first inning, but Zanesville grabbed two runs in the bottom of the second inning off of a single and an error to take a 2 – 0 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Nathan Better hit a triple to center bringing in McGreevy to up their lead to 3, followed by a single by Lincicome to bring in Better and Winland to end the inning up 5 – 0.
Coshocton was finally able to hit the scoreboard in the top of the fifth inning with a run off of a Shrimplin single. They added to their tally in the top of the sixth inning when Woodard hit a fly ball that brought in Greenwalt. Zanesville answered back with a sacrifice from McClellan to bring in Stambush followed by another sacrifice this time by Lincicome to bring home Better. Winland came across home plate on a single by Hindel that ended the inning with Zanesville leading 8 – 2. Coshocton was not able to scrape together any more runs in the seventh inning and Zanesville took a game one victory.
Game two was dominated by Zanesville who took the lead from the first inning with two runs with Better scoring on a passed ball and Hindel scoring on a ground ball by Wiseman. The Senior Legion padded their lead in the bottom of the second inning with a single run followed by a four-run rally in the bottom of the third aided by two two-run singles, one by Better and the other by Riley to send Zanesville’s lead soaring to 7 – 0.
The Legion team added their eighth run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Coshocton was able to land a run in the top of the fifth inning off of a walked player, but they were not able to capitalize on full bases, and Zanesville piles on their three final runs in the form of a ground out, and two gimmes that were brought home by walked players to end the doubleheader with an 11 – 1 game two win and a complete sweep.
