Higgins Lumber legacy continues with new owners

Higgins Lumber, in conjunction with the Zanesville-Muskingum County Chamber of Commerce, held a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate a milestone for the locally owned, family-run business. Family, customers, and members of the community came to help congratulate owners Tom and Susie Piecynski on their one-year anniversary of owning the well-established 68-year-old business.

“We’ve run other businesses in the past and continue to run other businesses as well,” Susie said, “This is a different realm but the same idea, so it was really just kind of old hat and building it up, looking at things from a different lens and really just reaching out to the community here and seeing what we can do to continue the legacy.”

The couple owns The 146 restaurant located in the Colony Square Mall and Flecto Construction. The duo have a passion for helping others within the community, whether it is another small business or the local schools, the Piecynskis are eager to pitch in to do what they can. Just last year, they donated lumber to locals in need after bad storms destroyed homes and buildings in the area.

“I think it is really important to support the people around us,” said Susie, “because if the community isn’t going to rise up and do it, and our family-owned businesses aren’t going to do it, then who is?”

Higgins Lumber has been a staple in the community, providing home improvement essentials since 1957.

“It was three generations of Higgins that ran this place,” explained Tom. “That is something that you don’t see a lot of. Usually, small businesses don’t last one or two generations at the most. This is the third, and now we’ve taken over, we’re not Higgins, but a fourth generation. It’s a big honor for us. It’s very special and we take it very seriously to make sure that we are trying to do right for the Higgins name and the community.”

Like most family-operated businesses, the entire family is involved, including the kids. The kids love to work and throw on a pair of gloves, help build loads, help clean, mop the floors, wipe down the shelves, and give Higgins Lumber employees assistance and a hand whenever they can.

Higgins Lumber is a Do it Best member store, so they are able to provide a wide array of products like a big corporate company can, but still maintain the small-town quality of service that only a locally owned hardware store can provide.

“We hope that this is really something that the community would lean on, that you don’t have to come down here, you can just call in or jump on the website,” said Susie. “We can pull things off the shelves, too, so if you see something on the website and you just want us to pull it and put it on a truck with whatever else you are getting, we can do that too.”

Delivery is a major focus for Higgins Lumber. They have a massive delivery range of three to four counties that includes Muskingum County and Guernsey County.

“We have a big capacity for delivery,” said Tom. “A lot of people used to come down here, but with Lowe’s and Home Depot coming to town, it really hurt the people that did not want to travel as much. We are trying to up awareness that we can bring it to you for a very cheap price and then save you time and money in the long run and deliver better products.”

In addition, Higgins Lumber can also perform estimates for your upcoming projects, and they have a large list of local contractors that they can suggest to help with any home improvement, remodeling, or construction needs. Any contractors that would like to get on their qualified bidders list can call the store or stop in to see them.

Higgins Lumber is located in Roseville, Ohio, at 5485 Second Street.

“We’re here, we’re hidden, but we’re here! And we’d love a chance at your business,” said Susie. “We’d love a chance to estimate for you, or if you need the odds and ends to order from our website, or come down and visit us,” said Susie. “It’s tucked away, but we would love a chance for your dollars to stay local in Muskingum County with people who are going to give back to your school. And if you need a job, come knock on our door and see what we have open for you.”
