If you have a sweet tooth and live in or have visited Muskingum County, you have probably treated yourself to some donuts from one of Zanesville’s sweetest stops, Donald’s Donuts. The shop is undeniably a local favorite, but has recently gained national attention since being named the number one donut shop in the country by USA Today’s 10 Best Readers’ Choice Awards.
This well-deserved award was made possible by the thousands of votes that poured in from Donald’s Donuts customers after news of the nomination spread on social media and traditional media outlets. A panel of at least 25 experts selected the businesses that were nominated to be voted on, and the rest was up to the fans.
“It’s absolutely amazing that this happened,” stated owner Tom Warne on Facebook. “But we know how it happened, it’s because we have the number one fan base in America. So all you guys did this for us.”
The family-owned donut shop has been treating our tastebuds to everyone’s favorite breakfast dessert since 1960. Donald Warne founded the business that is now run by second- and third-generation Warne family members. Although the very first Donald’s Donuts opened in Cherokee, North Carolina, the original shop in Zanesville was on Pine Street before eventually moving to their current location in 1984.
For those who have never visited, you undoubtedly should make the trip. Upon entering, you will notice the vintage vibe of the interior with bar seating near the ordering counter and a beautiful culinary array of the day’s donut assortment on display. Matching small tables fill the remaining floor space of the dining area, with large windows framing a bustling Maple Avenue and the classic Donald’s Donuts sign. The aroma of fresh donuts fills the air, and then you are faced with the toughest decision: “Which donut(s) should I order?” It is a difficult choice to make because there are over 40 decadent options to choose from including a variety of old fashion cake donuts; filled raised donuts like cream filled maple, cream filled chocolate, Bavarian cream filled, and jelly filled; honeybuns; apple fritters; twist donuts in chocolate, vanilla or maple; as well as cake donuts such as chocolate, maple, cherry, vanilla, blueberry, cinnamon sugar, and plain.

Donald’s Donuts is located at 2622 Maple Ave, Zanesville. Their hours of operation are 5:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. On Sunday, they are open from 6:00 a.m. until noon. The shop is currently closed Tuesdays, and they sometimes close early due to selling out of donuts, so it is best to either order ahead or come early.
