Zanesville, Ohio, Monday, April 29, 2019. To call public attention to the principles and practices of law and justice in the United States, the Muskingum County Bar Association sponsored an essay contest open to 2019 graduates of Muskingum County high schools.
Law Day is an annual event, which was originally conceived in 1957 when American Bar Association President Charles Rhynes envisioned a special national day to mark our commitment to the rule of law. Law Day is celebrated on May 1st of every year.
This year students focused on the theme, “Free Speech, Free Press, Free Society—focuses on these cornerstones of representative government and calls on us to understand and protect these rights to ensure, as the U.S. Constitution proposes, “the blessings of liberty for ourselves and our posterity.”
Chad Bell, a senior at Tri-Valley High School, will receive a $1,500 scholarship for his essay. Chad is the son of Craig and Traci Bell and plans to attend Bringham Young University to study mechanical engineering and computer science after completing mission work.
Other award recipients include, Maddie Phillips, a senior at Philo High School who will receive a $1,000 scholarship; and Austin McCleary, a senior at West Muskingum School who will receive a $500 scholarship.
The recipients will be honored during a presentation ceremony to be held at the Muskingum County Common Pleas Large Courtroom, Wednesday, May 1, 2018 at Noon.
