National Nurses Week Celebrate Wednesday, May 6 through Tuesday, May 12

Genesis HealthCare System is celebrating National Nurses Week from Wednesday, May 6 through Tuesday, May 12. The annual celebration acknowledges the contributions nurses make to their communities. Nurses are a vital part of Genesis, filling roles from executive leadership to the front lines. At all levels, nurses routinely help develop and implement new procedures to provide the best care. They are the largest group of employees at Genesis.

“I am so grateful for our nurses at Genesis. They continually find ways to improve healthcare by incorporating technology while never losing their compassion for patients,” said Shon Bender, R.N., chief nursing officer.

The national movement to celebrate nurses started in 1953. After numerous attempts and variations, in 1982, President Ronald Reagan signed a proclamation announcing May 6 as National Recognition Day for Nurses. In 1990, the American Nurses Association expanded the celebration to a weeklong event, from May 6 to May 12, to end on Florence Nightingale’s birthday, who is often considered the founder of modern nursing.
