Alice in Wonder Land

by Alice Stratman Smith

I watered my flowers and bushes in front of my condo here in Zanesville, Ohio this morning and also pulled a few weeds. There were small clusters of clover plants that I uprooted. I remember when I was a kid that I was always looking for a four leaf clover to bring me luck. I never found very many but thrilled when I did. Another ‘tradition’ was to get the ‘wishbone’ when eating chicken. Two people (usually kids) would pull on this bone and whoever got the small or large part (I forget which one) got their wish. At my age I remember doing things years ago but the details aren’t clear. Now I am always hunting for three things: my car keys, credit card, and I forget the other one.

On the first day of school kindergarten boys and girls were told by their teacher to put their right hand on their heart for the Pledge of Allegiance to the US flag. One little boy put his hand on his hip because that’s where his grandma patted him and said “Bless your little heart”.

On our 11th anniversary, November 17, 1973, when we lived in Millersburg, Ohio I gave my husband Larry a copy of The Living Bible. He has the following scripture marked: Hebrews 10:24&25…In response to all He (God) has done for us, let us outdo each other in being helpful and kind to each other and in doing good. Let us not neglect our church meetings, as some people do, but encourage and warn each other, especially now that the day of his coming back again is drawing near.
