Easter is a joyful time filled with traditions, shared meals, and colorful activities—but it also presents important food safety and health considerations for families. Prioritizing safe handling practices, balanced nutrition, and mindful planning can help ensure a celebration that supports well-being. A key part of Easter festivities involves eggs whether it is decorating them, hiding them, and enjoying them in meals. According to Food Safety News, eggs can carry Salmonella, making proper handling essential. Hard-boiled eggs should be cooked until both whites and yolks reach 160°F and refrigerated within two hours. Leaving eggs at room temperature for too long increases bacterial risk. Additionally, the FDA and USDA advise using food-safe dyes and discarding eggs used in outdoor egg hunts rather than consuming them afterward (Food Safety News, 2025).

Traditional Easter meals—such as ham, lamb, or brisket—also require attention. Raw meats can contain Listeria or E. coli and must be cooked to safe internal temperatures. Cross-contamination is a common holiday risk, so families should clean surfaces and utensils thoroughly after preparing raw meats (Food Safety News, 2025). Side dishes, desserts, and leftovers also require proper storage. The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development reminds families to keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold, avoiding the danger zone between 40°F and 140°F. Leftovers should be refrigerated within two hours and eaten within four days (Mukomel, 2025). Families can also support nutrition by pairing traditional favorites with fresh produce, whole grains, and lean proteins to create a balanced holiday plate. Don’t forget to treat yourself to some yummy dessert or candy, as balance is important to wellness. Simple food safety practices help ensure a safe, healthy, and enjoyable Easter for all.
