Muskingum University Launches New Master of Science in Nursing: Leadership and Education Program

Muskingum University is expanding its commitment to healthcare education with the launch of a new Master of Science in Nursing: Leadership and Education program. This program is one of very few in Ohio that combines both leadership and education into a single program, designed to prepare nurses for advanced leadership, teaching, and professional growth opportunities in today’s evolving healthcare environment.

The fully online graduate program is designed for working nurses seeking to advance their careers while continuing to serve their communities and healthcare organizations. Through coursework focused on nursing leadership, education, communication, and evidence-based practice, students will gain the skills needed to lead teams, educate future nurses, and help shape the future of healthcare delivery.

“Muskingum’s new MSN in Leadership and Education reflects our commitment to preparing nurses for the next stage of their careers and meeting critical workforce needs in healthcare,” said Dr. Paul Szalay, Interim Provost. “This program will help students grow as educators and leaders while strengthening the healthcare systems and communities they serve.”

The launch of the MSN: Leadership and Education program reflects Muskingum University’s continued investment in addressing critical healthcare workforce needs through accessible, high-quality graduate education. As healthcare organizations and nursing programs continue to face growing demand for experienced nurse leaders and educators, the program aims to help nurses expand their impact both in clinical settings and educational environments.

“Muskingum University is proud to expand its healthcare education offerings through the introduction of the MSN in Leadership & Education,” said Joseph C. Shaeffer, DNP, RN, Director & Chair of Nursing Programs. “This program is designed to empower nurses to lead with confidence, educate with purpose, and help shape the future of healthcare delivery. By investing in advanced nursing education, Muskingum is helping build stronger healthcare systems and creating new pathways for professional growth and community impact.”

Students in the program will engage with experienced faculty and complete practical coursework that emphasizes leadership development, healthcare innovation, curriculum and instruction, collaboration, and patient-centered care. The flexible online format allows students to balance graduate education with professional and personal responsibilities.

The program is expected to serve nurses across Ohio and beyond who are seeking a flexible pathway to career advancement and opportunities in nursing leadership, staff development, clinical education, and academic instruction.
