John Glenn graduate Sharoll Bonner received a $1,500 scholarship from Larry ‘’The Legend’’ Waltz at an award ceremony at his high school last month.
“[I wanted] to help people out, to help people that need to go to school, any graduates that want to go on into trade school, college, whatever,” said Waltz about why he wanted to create the scholarship. “My mom and dad believed in education, although they only went to 8th grade. But my sister and I, we all went to college and so on. So that’s the reason. I did it to honor my mom and dad.”
The scholarship is named after Waltz’s mother, Mary and father, William.
The William F., Mary T, and Larry W. Waltz Family Scholarship is awarded each year. It is open to any John Glenn High School graduating senior who plans to continue their education in any way or seek job training within one year of graduating from high school. Along with the application, a short essay had to be submitted explaining how the scholarship would help with the student’s future plans.
A panel of NCHS/JGHS alumni judged the essays.
Next year, Waltz wants to give two students scholarships.
“I’m glad we were able to do it,” said Waltz. “And to help students out in these colleges, it’s more like everything else, it’s expensive. And that little bit will help them, you know. I’m glad we were able to do it.”
